Paid ads for local businesses are ads shown only to people nearby and ready to buy, almost always on Google, within a radius of a few miles, with a call button and a Maps presence. They pay off when the margin from one new customer comfortably covers the clicks it takes to make the sale. For most neighborhood services that’s the case, as long as the account targets only the area you serve, tracks calls and WhatsApp, and cuts searches from people who don’t buy.
This guide is for those who have already decided to advertise or are choosing who will handle it. The numbers come from three Ciclicko studies conducted in October 2026.
When paid ads for local businesses pay off
The math is simple and you can do it before spending a single real. Take the profit from a new customer, not the revenue, and compare it with the cost of acquiring that customer.
A locksmith example. In our CPC study by industry, locksmiths came in at R$3.45 per click, which is Google’s estimated top-of-page bid in October 2026, not what each company pays. If 1 in 8 clicks becomes a job, a customer costs about R$28. A single door opening pays that back several times.
Now a tighter case. In the same study, a plumber shows R$10.70 per click. With the same 1-in-8 rate, a customer costs R$85.60. It still works, but only if the average job is worth more than a sink repair.
The median across the 103 industries in the study is R$4.96. If you’re above it, you need a better page and better customer service to make the numbers work.
| Local industry | Estimated top-of-page bid (Oct 2026) | Combined monthly searches |
|---|---|---|
| Pest control | R$18.25 | 97.500 |
| Plumber | R$10.70 | 55.670 |
| Electrician | R$5.70 | 102.900 |
| Locksmith | R$3.45 | 514.890 |
| Auto repair shop | R$2.95 | 309.400 |
| Barbershop | R$2.55 | 924.000 |
Searches for the topic itself say something too. In Keyword Planner, in October 2026, “paid search for local businesses” has 70 searches per month with a top-of-page bid of R$20.10. And “paid search local store” has 10 searches, with a bid of R$19.97. Few people search for it, and the ones who do already want to hire.
The right radius, and the mistake that scatters your budget
The radius should cover only the area you actually serve, and the location option must be “Presence”. This is the setting that wastes the most money in neighborhood accounts.
Google Ads lets you target a country, city, region or a radius around an address. The official page on location targeting explains that the default is “Presence or interest”, which includes people who only showed interest in your area. For a hotel chain, that makes sense. For a barbershop, it’s clicks from someone in another state who searched the neighborhood out of curiosity.
In practice, we adjust it like this.
- Set the radius by the distance your customer is willing to travel or you are willing to go. Barbershops and bakeries fall between 2 and 5 km (1 to 3 miles). Home services go as far as your team can reach the same day.
- Switch the option to “Presence”, which shows the ad only to people who are in or regularly in the area.
- Exclude neighborhoods you don’t serve inside the radius, when there are any.
- After 30 days, open the locations report and cut the regions that spend without generating contacts.
Phone calls and WhatsApp count as conversions
A neighborhood business sells by phone and by WhatsApp, and your account needs to measure both. Without that, Google optimizes for clicks and you pay for people who looked and left.
The call asset puts a call button on your ad. According to Google’s help page on call assets, you can show the number only during the hours when someone answers, and a phone number inside the ad text can be disapproved. Use the asset, not the number written out.
For WhatsApp, the measurement is the click on the website button that opens the conversation. The step-by-step is in Google Ads for WhatsApp.
In October 2026, we looked at the profiles Google Maps shows first in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte for a few local niches, and what we found on their websites explains why so many local accounts can’t tell whether they pay off.
- Cleaning companies, 45 profiles. Of the 40 websites we could read, 75% have a WhatsApp link and only 18% have the Google Ads tag.
- Landscaping, 58 profiles. Of the 45 websites read, 4% have the Google Ads tag.
- Custom furniture, 60 profiles. Of the 39 websites read, 31% have the tag.
WhatsApp is there. Measurement almost never is. If you advertise without the tag, you don’t know which search brought in the customer.
Maps comes along too, and sometimes first
On a phone, someone searching for a nearby service sees the map before the websites. A weak Google Maps profile leaves the ad working alone, and the reverse also happens. Sometimes a well-kept profile solves the problem before you spend on ads.
You can bring your ad into the map with the location asset, which links your ads account to your Business Profile. The details of how it appears are in advertising on Google Maps.
Before paying for that, check the profile basics. Right category, business hours, real photos, replied reviews. If your business doesn’t even show up when someone searches its name, the problem comes before the ad, and the way forward is in how to make your business show up on Google.
The page that gets the click
The paid click lands on a page, and it needs to load fast on a phone and show the contact button without scrolling. Of the 8 cleaning company websites we measured on PageSpeed, all took more than 2.5 seconds to show the largest element on the phone screen, and the median was 9.25 seconds.
Nine seconds is enough time for someone to go back and tap the competitor below you. You pay for the click all the same.
The first screen of a local business page needs four things.
- The service and the neighborhood or city in the headline.
- Visible WhatsApp and call buttons.
- Business hours and whether you serve same-day.
- Real proof, such as your Google rating or photos of finished work.
What to ask whoever will manage your account
Local Google Ads management is different from e-commerce and from launches. Whoever manages a neighborhood business account needs to answer the questions below before you sign.
- Which radius and which location option will you use, and why?
- Will calls, WhatsApp and forms be measured as conversions? Starting when?
- How many negative searches come in during the first week? Jobs, courses, free and “how to” are usually the first. The full list is in negative keywords in Google Ads.
- Is the Google Maps profile part of the work or left out?
- Does the report show cost per contact, or only clicks and impressions?
A warning sign is a report with only reach and clicks, without the number of contacts. Another is an ads account created in the agency’s name, not yours. The account has to be yours from day one.

What Ciclicko management costs
Local Google Ads management at Ciclicko is priced on request, depending on scope. Elite Management includes building 1 campaign with up to 2 ad groups, Tag Manager and GA4, configured conversions and two optimization rounds, on day 7 and day 14. If you only want the account built, there is the Premium Setup. To get a quote, message us on WhatsApp.
The ad budget is paid directly to Google, separate from management. And none of the plans promises a number of customers, because that depends on your price, your customer service and the competition on your street.
Frequently asked questions
How do you run paid search for local businesses? Create a Search campaign with a radius around your address and the location option set to “Presence”, turn on the call asset, measure WhatsApp clicks as a conversion and add job and course searches as negatives. After 30 days, cut the regions and searches that spent without generating contacts.
What does Google Ads management for local businesses involve? It builds and adjusts the campaign, handles the radius, keywords and negatives, measures calls and WhatsApp and shows in the report how much each contact cost. Taking care of the Google Maps profile alongside it is usually part of good work.
How much should you invest in paid search per month? It depends on your industry’s click cost and how many contacts you want. Multiply the industry bid by about 30 clicks per week for a starting point, then adjust by cost per contact after 30 days.
How much should you invest in paid search to get a return? Enough to collect contacts that let you compare cost and profit within a month. With a very small budget, the campaign barely moves and you learn nothing. Work out the profit per customer before deciding on the amount.
Is paid search worth it for a neighborhood store? It is when the profit from a new customer comfortably covers the cost of the clicks it took to get them. For urgent services, like a locksmith or plumber, the numbers usually work out fast, because people searching already need the service.
Do sponsored ads on Google Maps work for a physical store? They work when your Business Profile is complete and linked to your ads account through the location asset. With a weak profile, the ad shows up, but people compare you with the neighbors and pick whoever has more reviews and photos.
Where to start
If your company already runs ads, the free Google Ads audit shows where the account stands today: the searches it appears for and how it measures results. If you don’t advertise yet, start with the free Google Business Profile audit, which compares your profile with three competitors in your area. To hand the account to someone who manages it every day, see Ciclicko’s Google Ads management.
