Google Ads has six main campaign types: Search, Performance Max, Demand Gen, Display, Shopping, and Video. For a service business that wants contacts, Search almost always comes first. Performance Max comes in later, once the account measures conversions properly. The others serve specific goals, such as remarketing, a product catalog, or brand awareness.

Choosing the wrong type is one of the fastest ways to spend without return. Each campaign type shows up in a different place and optimizes for a different thing. Google has its own page on how to choose a campaign type, and here’s the practical take from someone who manages accounts every day.

Search

This is the text ad that shows up when someone searches on Google. You choose the keywords, write the headlines and descriptions, and pay per click.

It works best when there’s already active demand for what you sell: “dental implants south side,” “labor lawyer,” “AC repair.” The person already knows what they want, and the ad shows up right at the decision moment.

This is the campaign type that gives you the most control. You see the search terms that triggered your ad, add negative keywords, and adjust bids by keyword. If you’re just getting started, this is where to begin.

Performance Max

A single campaign that distributes ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover, and Maps. You provide text, images, videos, and audience signals, and Google’s automation decides where and to whom to show them.

The strength is reach. The weakness is that it optimizes for whatever you define as a conversion. If your account counts a WhatsApp click as a sale, Performance Max will chase more WhatsApp clicks, including from people who only wanted to ask a question. We cover this in our article on when to use Performance Max.

Demand Gen

It shows up on YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, and Gmail, with images and video. It’s meant to generate demand among people who aren’t searching yet, and it works well with audiences similar to people who already bought from you.

It depends on creative assets. Without good images and videos, it won’t run. This is something we clarify before any proposal: campaign management doesn’t include producing the creative.

Display

Banner ads on websites and apps in the Google Display Network. For direct service sales it usually performs poorly, but it’s useful for remarketing, to remind people who visited your site and left. Check out our guide on remarketing and retargeting.

Shopping

Shows the product photo, price, and store name in the results. It depends on a catalog in Merchant Center. These days you can run it as a standalone Shopping campaign or inside Performance Max. We walk through the steps in how to advertise on Google Shopping.

Video

Ads on YouTube before, during, or alongside videos. Good for brand awareness and for explaining a product that needs a demo. For generating leads quickly, it loses out to Search.

The most common mistake

Turning on Performance Max on day one, with no conversion tracking set up and no history. Automation needs data to learn. Without data, it learns the wrong lessons, and the first month turns into an expensive test.

The order that works is: a well-built Search campaign, conversions tracked reliably, and only then automation. If you’re not sure your account is tracking conversions correctly, our free audit checks this using your account’s own data.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run more than one campaign type at the same time? You can, and it’s common. The thing to watch for is two campaigns competing for the same search and driving up each other’s costs.

Is a Smart campaign the same thing as Performance Max? No. A Smart campaign is the simplified version for beginners, with little control. We cover it in our article on expert mode.

Which one gets results fastest? Search, because it speaks to people who are already looking.

Do I need video to run ads? Only for Video and Demand Gen. Search and Shopping work without it.
