Expert mode is the full version of Google Ads, with access to keywords, search terms, negative keywords, bids, and every campaign type. Smart mode is the simplified version Google offers to beginners. If you want to control where your money goes, expert mode is the way to go, and you switch to it in the account settings.

Anyone creating a Google Ads account for the first time almost always ends up in Smart mode without realizing it. Signup asks for your goal, budget, and region, and within minutes the campaign is live. The problem shows up later, when the budget disappears and you can’t tell why.

What Smart mode is

It’s a stripped-down interface built for Smart campaigns. You describe the business, pick keyword themes, and Google handles the rest. Google’s page on Smart campaigns lists the benefits, which are real for anyone with zero time to spare.

The cost of that simplicity is control. In Smart mode you don’t choose keywords one by one, you can’t set match types, you have limited access to negatives, and you barely see what’s happening under the hood.

What you get in Expert mode

  • Real keywords. You choose each term and its match type (broad, phrase, or exact).
  • Search terms report. Shows what people typed before clicking. This is where wasted spend shows up.
  • Full negative keywords. You block the searches that don’t sell. We explain how in negative keywords in Google Ads.
  • Bid strategy. You choose between maximizing clicks, conversions, target CPA, and others.
  • Every campaign type. Search, Performance Max, Demand Gen, Shopping, Video.
  • Conversions configured by you. This defines what counts as a result and what’s just a signal.
  • Adjustments for time, location, and device. So you spend more when the customer buys and less when they’re just browsing.

How to switch to expert mode

In your account, open the tools menu and look for the option to switch to expert mode (in some accounts it’s under the three-dot menu in the upper corner). If the account doesn’t exist yet, there’s a discreet link at the start of setup to create the account in expert mode, without a campaign.

Two things to watch out for before switching:

  1. Smart campaigns keep running. They don’t turn into Search campaigns on their own. If you want control, set up Search and pause the smart campaign afterward.
  2. The interface changes a lot. Many menus appear at once. It’s worth setting aside an afternoon to find your way around before touching bids.

When smart mode still works

For a very small business, with a budget of a few reais a day and no one to monitor the account, a smart campaign can be better than nothing. It delivers some presence.

It becomes a problem as the budget grows. Once you’re spending a few hundred reais a month, the lack of control usually costs more than the time it takes to learn, or than paying someone to manage it.

What to do after switching

  1. Set up your main conversion (form, call, or WhatsApp) and check that it fires.
  2. Build a Search campaign with a few keywords, the ones closest to the sale.
  3. Upload an initial list of negative keywords.
  4. Check search terms every week for the first few months.

Can you switch back to smart mode? Yes, in settings, as long as the account only has compatible campaigns.

Do you lose your history when you switch? No. The data and campaigns stay in place.

You don’t have time to manage it. Now what? Then it makes sense to hand it off to someone who does. Ciclicko’s Google Ads management works in expert mode, and the free audit shows you first what your account is doing today.
