Google Ads management for lawyers means advertising on Google to people who are already looking for a lawyer in your area, and Brazil’s Bar Association (OAB) allows it when the ad answers a search made by the client. In practice, the campaign runs on the Search Network, split by practice area, with informational copy and no prices. Cost varies a lot from one area to another. In October 2026, the top-of-page bid for “advogado criminalista” (criminal lawyer) ranged from R$6.38 to R$34.01, while “advogado previdenciário” (social security lawyer) ranged from R$2.98 to R$10.73.

This guide covers the campaign. The advertising rules, article by article, are in our piece on OAB Provimento 205/2021.

What Google Ads management for lawyers means in practice

You pay to appear at the top of Google when someone types a search related to your practice area, and you only pay when the person clicks. For a law firm, the format that fits the rules and brings in consultations is the Google Ads Search campaign.

The reason is simple. The annex to Provimento 205/2021, published on the OAB website, allows buying keywords “when responsive to a search initiated by the potential client”. Someone who types “advogado trabalhista perto de mim” (labor lawyer near me) asked for the information. The ad answers.

Video is a different story. The same annex prohibits “ostensive ads on video platforms”, and boosting a post is only allowed when it doesn’t offer legal services. That’s why this guide sticks to the Search Network.

There is a small but real market searching for this. In Google Ads Keyword Planner, in October 2026, the two most common forms of this search added up to 720 + 170 searches per month, with bids between R$5 and R$28. The people searching are lawyers themselves, trying to understand whether advertising is worth it.

How much a click costs in each area of law

A click costs what the other firms in your area and your city are willing to pay. The numbers below come from our CPC by industry study, which measured 103 industries in Keyword Planner. It’s the top-of-page bid estimated by Google in October 2026, not what each company actually pays.

AreaMain searchSearches per monthTop-of-page bidIndustry midpoint

Social securitysocial security lawyer6.600R$2.98 to R$10.73R$2.57

The right column is the average for the whole industry, with cheap informational searches included. For your first campaign, look at the middle one.

The cheap search that brings no clients

Look at “processo trabalhista” (labor lawsuit). It gets 74,000 searches a month and a bid of R$0.08 to R$1.78. Looks like a bargain. But people who type that usually want to follow an existing case or understand how it works, not hire anyone. “Revisão da vida toda” (lifetime pension review) is the same: 18,100 searches and a bid of up to R$1.86.

“Advogado trabalhista” (labor lawyer), on the other hand, has 60,500 searches and a bid of R$7.53 to R$18.08. It costs more because the person searching wants a lawyer. In your first campaign, stick to searches that include the word “advogado” (lawyer) or the name of the service along with the city.

How to set up a Google Ads campaign for lawyers, step by step

A law firm campaign that works has few pieces, tightly connected. This is the order we follow.

  1. One search campaign per practice area. Criminal and social security law don’t share a budget, because a click in one costs several times more than in the other and Google would spend everything on the most expensive area.
  2. Hiring-intent keywords. “Criminal defense lawyer in Campinas,” “lawyer for custody hearing,” “family lawyer south zone.” Start with phrase match and exact match.
  3. Negative keywords from day one. “Free,” “for free,” “public defender,” “civil service exam,” “salary,” “course,” “petition template,” “what is.” The full guide to building the list is in negative keywords in Google Ads.
  4. Location based on the radius you actually serve. A firm that only holds in-person hearings in one judicial district gains nothing by showing up across the whole state.
  5. Informative ad. Practice area, city, how you see clients, name and OAB (Brazilian Bar Association) number. No price, no “the best,” no promises.
  6. Landing page for the advertised practice area. Never the homepage.
  7. Conversion tracking set up before you turn the campaign on. Form submitted, WhatsApp click and phone call.

The seventh step is the one most often missing, and the next section shows why.

What the top-ranked firms on Google Maps have on their websites

In October 2026, we surveyed the 60 profiles Google Maps shows first in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte for “escritório de advocacia” (law firm). We were able to read the website of 54 of them and measured mobile speed on a sample of 8.

What we measuredResult
Average Google rating4,89
Median reviews214,5
Profiles with 100 reviews or more75%
Sites with Google Tag Manager59%
Sites with GA4 installed20%
Sites with no Tag Manager and no GA430%
Sites with the Google Ads tag20%
Sites with WhatsApp link74%
Load time of the largest element on mobile (median of the 8 sites)4.95 s
Sample sites above 2.5 s88%

Two numbers stand out. Only 20% of the sites had the Google Ads tag, while 74% had a WhatsApp link. In other words, almost every firm gets contacts through WhatsApp, and few are set up to tell Google which click turned into a conversation.

Without this tracking, Google Ads optimizes in the dark. It sees the click but never finds out the person messaged on WhatsApp, so it doesn’t learn who the good client is. How to track that click is explained in Google Ads for WhatsApp.

Speed matters too. On the 8 sites we measured, the median time for the largest element to appear on mobile was 4.95 seconds, almost double the 2.5 seconds Google considers good. You pay for the click and the person may give up before seeing the page.

Ad copy within what the OAB allows

The ad can say what the firm does, where it serves and how to book. Under Article 3 of the OAB’s provimento (its advertising rules), it can’t mention fees or free services, promise results or compare the firm with others.

An example that follows the rule:

  • Headline: Criminal Defense Lawyer in Curitiba
  • Headline: Service by Appointment
  • Description: Firm focused on criminal defense. Attorney Name Surname, OAB/PR 00.000.

And one that crosses the line:

  • Headline: Free Consultation with the Best Criminal Lawyer
  • Description: Win your case. We offer fee installments.

“Free” is a free offer, “Best” is a comparison, “Win your case” is a promise and “installments” is a payment term. Four problems in two lines.

Another thing that needs care is specialization. The provimento prohibits advertising a specialty for which the lawyer has no certified title or recognized expertise. “Practice in family law” is safer than “family law specialist” when there is no title.

Google Ads for criminal defense lawyers: the most expensive case

Among the seven areas of law in the table, criminal has the highest bid, R$20.27 at the midpoint, and “advogado criminal” reached R$34.32 at the top. The reason is urgency. People searching often have someone in custody right now.

This changes three things in the campaign.

  • Hours matter. The search can come in at night or on a Sunday, and the ad is only worth it if someone answers.
  • Calls and WhatsApp need to be tracked, because people in a hurry rarely fill out a form.
  • Long-tail searches are cheap and on target. “Habeas corpus advogado” had 70 searches and a bid of R$3.50 to R$16.83. “Advogado para audiência de custódia” (lawyer for custody hearing) had 10 searches and a bid of R$5.94 to R$18.74.

If nobody answers outside business hours, schedule the ads for the hours when someone picks up.

How much to invest to start

The minimum is whatever pays for enough clicks for Google to learn. A practical calculation uses the bid from the table. If a click in your area is around R$15, a budget of R$1,500 per month buys about 100 clicks, and that already shows whether the page converts.

Start with one area only, the one with the best client for the firm, and only open the second when the first is being tracked. The full calculation, with examples, is in how much to invest in Google Ads.

Google Maps profile alongside your ad

The ad and Maps work together. Many people see the ad, open the firm’s profile on Maps, read the reviews and only then call.

In our survey, the top-ranked profiles had a median of 214.5 reviews and none had fewer than 20. If your profile has few reviews, the ad sends the person to a competitor with more social proof. The guide on how to optimize your Google Business Profile shows what to fix before you invest.

For the firm’s social media content, the article on Instagram for lawyers covers what can be posted. The overview of channels is in our guide to law firm marketing.

Frequently asked questions

How does Google Ads management work for lawyers? The firm picks the searches for its area, such as “advogado de família em Campinas” (family lawyer in Campinas), and pays Google each time someone clicks the ad. The ad appears only to people who ran the search, which is the format the OAB accepts.

How much does Google Ads management for lawyers cost? The click depends on the area. In October 2026, the top bid ranged from R$2.98 to R$10.73 for “advogado previdenciário” and from R$6.38 to R$34.01 for “advogado criminalista”. You set the monthly budget in Google Ads.

Can a lawyer run ads on Google? Yes. In Brazil, the annex to Provimento 205/2021 allows buying keywords when the ad answers a search started by the client, with informative text.

What is the best paid advertising for lawyers? A Google Ads search campaign, split by practice area. It only shows to people who looked for the service, unlike overt video ads, which the provimento prohibits.

How do you choose a Google Ads agency for lawyers? Ask to see how it tracks conversions, which negative keywords it uses in your area and how it handles ad copy under OAB rules. The article what to ask a Google Ads specialist before signing has the list.

This guide is not legal advice. If you have doubts about a specific ad, check with your state OAB section.
