SaaS marketing is about getting the right company to find your software when it is looking to solve a problem, test the product and become a subscriber, and knowing which channel brought each subscription. On Google, clicks for software are expensive. The software development sector had a top-of-page bid in the middle of the R$11.13 range in October 2026. That is why what separates those who grow from those who burn budget is measuring beyond the signup, all the way to the first payment, and having content that answers the search for the problem, not the product.

What is SaaS marketing, in one sentence

SaaS marketing is the set of channels (paid search, SEO, content, referrals and AI answers) that takes a company from the problem to a software trial and from the trial to a paid subscription, measured by the recurring revenue each channel generates.

The difference from a service company is at the end of the funnel. An agency or a software house sells a project, and a lead who asks for a quote is already the conversion. A SaaS sells a subscription that starts small, sometimes free, and is only worth something if the customer stays for months. A trial signup is not a sale.

How much a software click costs on Google

In our October 2026 study, the software development sector totaled 10,390 searches a month and had a top-of-page bid range of R$4.09 to R$18.17. This is the bid Google estimates for the top of the page in October 2026, not what each company pays. The ranking and method are in our CPC by sector study.

Search (October 2026)Searches per monthTop bid, range
software company5.400R$4.89 to R$21.09
software development4.400R$2.87 to R$13.63
app development480R$5.66 to R$26.38
custom software110R$6.59 to R$21.03

These searches come from people who want to hire a development team, so they fit a software house. For a SaaS, they show something else: the price ceiling. Anyone searching for software on Google with buying intent is competing in an auction where the top of the range goes above R$20 per click.

With clicks at that price, a free trial that never becomes a subscriber gets very expensive. The number that matters is how much each paying customer costs, and our guide to cost per lead shows how to build that calculation before you raise your budget.

Google Ads for SaaS: buy the problem, measure the subscription

Google Ads works for SaaS when the campaign buys the search for the problem your software solves and when Google gets back the information about who paid. Without that feedback, it learns to bring in cheap signups.

How to set it up:

  1. Separate campaigns by problem or by audience (“online scheduling for clinics”, “electronic contract signing”, “chatbot for WhatsApp”), each with a page that speaks to that case.
  2. A campaign on your brand name, because competitors bid on your name and people searching for you need to find you.
  3. Layered conversions. The trial signup counts as a secondary conversion, and the first paid invoice as the primary one.
  4. The paid subscription goes back to Google Ads through the click ID, with its value. The step-by-step guide to sending the sale back to Google works the same way for subscriptions.

Among the software company websites we reviewed, only 12% had the Google Ads tag. Product events like signup, activation and upgrade need to exist in GA4 before that, and the logic is in GA4 events.

SEO for startups: content that answers the problem

SEO for software startups works when each page answers a question the buyer asks before knowing your product exists. The “features” page almost never shows up in search. The page that explains how to solve the problem, with your product as one of the options, does.

The pages that usually bring in trials for a SaaS:

  • A use case page, written for one industry or one role.
  • An honest comparison page with the alternative the customer already uses, including the spreadsheet.
  • An integration page for each tool your software connects to.
  • Public documentation and a help center, which answer very specific questions.
  • A blog article about the problem, linked to the use case.

Google describes what it considers helpful, people-first content, and the guidance fits SaaS well. Text written by someone who knows the problem, with a real example and original data. The 90-day plan to organize this is in SEO strategy.

AI answers: where software buyers ask first

Many people now ask ChatGPT or Gemini which tool to use before opening Google. To show up in that answer, your software needs to be described clearly on your own site and cited in sources these AIs read.

What to do is in our guide to SEO for AI. One simple technical step is to publish a file that summarizes your site for AI bots, explained in llms.txt.

Structured data helps here too. Among the 49 software company websites we reviewed, 67% had schema, above the 41% of custom furniture stores and the 49% of freight carriers in the same survey. This is the niche that knows the tool best, and still a third don’t use it.

What Google Maps shows for software companies

In October 2026, we reviewed the first 60 profiles Google Maps shows in São Paulo, Rio and Belo Horizonte for the search “empresa de software”. It’s the closest thing to SaaS that local search answers, and the sample mixes software houses with product companies. For anyone selling subscriptions online, Maps matters less, but the profile shows up when a buyer searches your company name to check that it exists.

What we measured (10/15/2026)Result
Profiles analyzed on Google Maps60
Average profile rating4,69
Median reviews per profile16,5
Profiles with fewer than 20 reviews62%
Profiles without a website10%
Sites with Google Tag Manager (out of 49)53%
Sites with no Tag Manager and no GA420%
Sites with Google Ads tag12%
Sites with structured data (schema)67%
Median mobile LCP (8 sites)9.75 s
Median mobile PageSpeed score (8 sites)55,5

The most troubling finding is speed. On the 8 sites we measured, the median mobile LCP was 9.75 seconds, and every one went over 2.5 seconds, the limit Google calls good. A tech company with a slow site loses the argument before the demo.

Marketing for software companies: what to do first

For an early-stage SaaS with a small budget, this is the order that usually pays off most in SaaS marketing.

  1. Measure signup, activation and first invoice in GA4 and Google Ads.
  2. A brand campaign and a campaign for a single problem, the clearest one.
  3. Three or four use case pages, written by the people who support customers.
  4. A profile on Google and on LinkedIn with the same name, address and description. LinkedIn carries a lot of weight in B2B software, and the path is in LinkedIn for businesses.
  5. Only then increase your budget, looking at the cost per paid subscription and not the cost per signup.

Marketing for software companies that starts at step 5 usually ends with a lot of free trials and little revenue.

Frequently asked questions

What is SaaS marketing? It’s the marketing of software sold by subscription. It takes the company from the problem to the trial and from the trial to the paid subscription, and it’s measured by the recurring revenue each channel brings in, not by the number of signups.

How do you do marketing for SaaS? Measure signup, activation and payment, advertise on Google for the problems your software solves, write use case and integration pages, and send back to Google Ads the people who became subscribers.

Does SEO for startups work with little content? It works when the few pages answer real buyer questions, with a concrete example. Ten well-made use case pages tend to be worth more than fifty generic articles.

Is Google Ads worth it for SaaS? It is when the account measures the paid subscription and not just the signup. With software clicks reaching more than R$20 at the top of the page, a campaign without that measurement tends to spend on trials that don’t convert.

What’s the difference between marketing for software companies and for SaaS? A software house sells projects, and the quote request is already the conversion. A SaaS sells subscriptions, and the conversion that matters is the recurring payment.

Google Ads management for SaaS

In Ciclicko’s Google Ads management, a SaaS account starts with measuring signups and subscriptions, and only then gets problem-based campaigns.
