Instagram SEO is writing your profile and captions with the words your customers type into search, so Instagram shows your account and your posts. According to Instagram itself, the text a person types is the most important search signal, and it is matched against username, bio, caption, hashtags and location. Public accounts and posts from professional profiles can also appear in search engine results like Google.
This Instagram SEO guide shows where each word goes, what Instagram states in official sources and what no outsider knows for sure. If your account is still being set up, start with how to create a professional Instagram account and come back here afterward.
How Instagram search works
Instagram search combines three signals, and the text you type carries more weight than the other two. The explanation comes from the post Breaking Down How Instagram Search Works, published on Instagram’s official website.
The three signals, in the order Instagram itself gives them:
- The text the person types. It is matched against the username, profile name, bio, captions, hashtags and locations.
- The person’s activity. Accounts they already follow, posts they have watched and past interactions move up the list.
- The popularity of the result. When there are many possible results, clicks, likes, shares and new followers help decide the order.
The third signal only changes over time. The first one depends entirely on what is written on your profile, and that is where Instagram SEO work happens.
On the same page, the direct recommendation is to put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not in the comments. This undoes a common practice: posting a short caption and dropping the block of hashtags in the first comment.
How much people search for this topic
We checked Google Ads Keyword Planner on October 30, 2026, for Brazil and in Portuguese.
| Search | Monthly volume | Estimated top-of-page bid |
|---|---|---|
| instagram seo | 50 | $5.31 |
| Instagram search | 210 | not collected |
Top-of-page bid is Google’s estimated bid for the top of the page in October 2026, not what each business actually pays. To compare with other topics, see our CPC survey by industry.
The number is small. That doesn’t mean the topic is irrelevant. It means few people use the technical term. People looking for Instagram SEO without using that term usually type “how to show up in Instagram search” or “how my profile appears on Google”, and Keyword Planner groups those cases into other lines.
Where to put the keyword in your profile
Your profile has four fields that search reads, and two of them are often wasted.
Profile name
The display name sits above the bio and is separate from the @username. Instagram’s page lists username and profile description among the fields compared, without listing the display name separately, so treat the name as one more place to say what you do. Instead of just the brand, write the brand plus what you do, for example “Brand name | Product photography”. Think about what a customer would type without knowing your brand.
Username
Your @username should be easy to remember and easy to type. Adding a keyword to it helps when the brand is still unknown, but changing a handle that already has followers and links scattered around costs more than it gains. For a new account, it’s worth considering. For an older account, leave it as it is.
Bio
Your bio has very few characters. Use the first line to state your service and city, the second for proof (years in business, type of client) and the third for the call to action. A catchy phrase with no concrete noun won’t be found by anyone.
Local
Instagram lists locations among the things it compares with the text people type. If your business serves a specific city, tag the location in your posts and write the city in your bio.
How to write an SEO caption for Instagram
The caption is the longest field you control and the one Instagram says it compares with the search. It has to do two jobs at once: convince the person who is already reading and contain the words of the person who hasn’t arrived yet.
This is the Instagram SEO method we use for captions, in four steps.
- Choose one keyword per post. Think about how a customer would describe the topic in a search. “Kids’ birthday cake in Campinas” is a search. “Sweetness that delights” is not.
- Put the keyword in the first sentence. People see the first lines before the “more” link. Having the term there helps the reader and the search.
- Repeat the term naturally. Once or twice in the text and once in the hashtag. A caption stuffed with repeated words hurts readability.
- Close with a question or a call to action. The popularity signal comes from interaction, and questions generate comments.

Hashtags: a few, focused on the topic
Instagram says it also compares the text you type with hashtags, but it doesn’t give an ideal number. What can be said is that a hashtag is one more place for the term, not a substitute for the caption. Use a few, specific to the post’s topic, within the body of the caption.
Text inside the image doesn’t replace a caption
A design with the key phrase written inside the image can be read by people, but on the page we checked, Instagram doesn’t list image text among the fields it compares with search. Repeat in the caption what appears in the design.
Instagram on Google: what the Help Center confirms
Instagram’s Help Center has a page on why search engines may index public Instagram photos and videos. According to it, search engine indexing applies to posts from public and professional accounts, owned by someone over 18, and covers content posted from January 1, 2020. The page also describes the privacy setting that turns this off.
Two practical notes.
First, personal accounts are left out. If your business profile is still set up as a personal account, switching to a professional account is a prerequisite. It’s also worth checking that the setting that lets your account appear in search engines hasn’t been turned off by someone on your team.
Second, being indexed is not the same as ranking. Being eligible to appear on Google doesn’t guarantee any position. What Instagram confirms is the possibility. How much Google shows, for which searches and in what position, is up to Google, and none of the official sources we opened publishes that rule. Anyone who claims otherwise is selling a forecast.
In practice, Instagram SEO also means your caption now has two readers: the person scrolling the feed and the search engine that reads the post text. Writing a clear sentence that spells out the topic works for both.
Instagram SEO and Website SEO: How They Fit Together
Instagram SEO doesn’t replace your website in Google Search. What it does is open one more door to your name and your topic. For someone searching “dentist in Campinas,” the result still depends on an optimized website and Google Business Profile. Instagram works as proof of activity and a showcase for your work.
A split that works for service businesses.
| Goal | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Get found by people searching for the service and the city | Website and Google Business Profile |
| Get found by people searching for the topic inside the app | Instagram profile and captions |
| Show your work after the client has found you | Feed, Highlights, and Reels |

What not to do
- Don’t buy likes, followers, or comments to rank higher in search. The popularity signal exists, but what it measures is real interest. An account with fake numbers loses the trust of the people who land on it.
- Don’t hide a business profile inside a personal account. You lose the metrics and, as we saw, eligibility for indexing.
- Don’t stuff your bio with loose keywords. “Marketing, sales, results, success” doesn’t say what you do.
- Don’t promise a ranking. No one controls the algorithm, and the platform itself changes its help page from time to time. Check the official sources before making any big decision.
How to measure whether Instagram SEO worked
Use the data Instagram itself provides to professional accounts, over a window of four to eight weeks after rewriting your bio and captions.
- Profile visits and where they came from.
- Reach from non-followers, which is the number that shows whether search and Explore are bringing in new people.
- Clicks on the link in your bio and on the contact buttons.
Write down the date of the change. Without a date, any variation is just opinion. And compare periods of the same length, because a holiday campaign skews the results.

Frequently asked questions
What is Instagram SEO? It’s the practice of writing your name, bio, captions and hashtags with the words your audience types, so Instagram and search engines can find your profile and your posts.
Does Instagram have real SEO? It has its own search system, and Instagram says the text someone types is the most important signal. The difference from Google is that there are fewer fields to work with, and the person’s activity weighs on the ranking order.
Do hashtags still help you get found? They help as one more place for the term, because Instagram also matches the typed text against hashtags. They don’t replace a well-written caption, and Instagram recommends putting hashtags in the caption, not in the comments.
Does my Instagram post show up on Google? It can, if the content is from a public professional account, owned by someone over 18, and if the search engine setting is turned on. Showing up is a possibility, not a guaranteed ranking.
Does a keyword in the profile name work? Instagram lists username and profile description among the fields matched against the typed text. Writing your service in the bio and next to your brand is the safest approach. Avoid lists of loose keywords.
How long does it take to see results? There’s no official timeframe. Rewrite your profile and captions, write down the date and track non-follower reach for a few weeks.
