If your question is how to promote my business without wasting money, the order matters more than the channel. Start with what is free and reaches people who are already searching: your Google Business Profile with reviews from real customers. Then comes an organized WhatsApp Business and a simple website. Instagram and referrals come next, and paid ads only when the basics are in place, because ads send people to everything that came before.

To show what separates the businesses that show up from those that don’t, in October 2026 we surveyed the profiles Google Maps shows first in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte across 15 niches. The numbers appear throughout the text.

The 8 channels, in the order worth pursuing

The table summarizes the path. The cost is the channel’s own, not counting your time.

OrderChannelChannel costWhat it does for you
1Google Business ProfileFreeShows up for people searching for the service in your area
2Google reviewsFreeConvinces people comparing you with the business next door
3WhatsApp BusinessFreeReplies fast and stores a catalog and ready-made messages
4Simple websiteDomain and hostingGives you your own address for ads and tracking
5InstagramFreeShows your work to people who have already heard of you
6Customer referralsFreeBrings in customers who arrive already trusting you
7Content and blogFree, takes timeAnswers questions that become searches
8Paid adsMonthly budgetSpeeds up what already works

The most common mistake is starting at the end. The business pays for ads to send people to a profile with no reviews and a WhatsApp that takes a day to reply.

How to promote my business for free

The first four channels cost nothing but work. Do them in this order.

1. Google Business Profile

This is where someone searching “electrician near me” or “aesthetic clinic in Moema” finds you on the map. Creating and claiming the profile is free, as stated on Google’s official page about adding or claiming your profile.

Fill in everything. The right category, real business hours, the same phone number as on your website, photos of the place and the team, services with descriptions. The full step-by-step is in Google Business Profile.

2. Reviews from real customers

A profile with no reviews rarely beats a profile with reviews. The mini-study below shows how big the gap is, niche by niche.

Ask every customer, with the direct link, right after the service. Ready-made messages and what Google prohibits are covered in how to ask for a Google review.

3. WhatsApp Business

Promoting your business without being able to reply is throwing contacts away. Set up an away message, quick replies, and a catalog with your main services. Someone who messages at 9 p.m. needs to at least know when they’ll get an answer.

4. Referrals

A satisfied customer is the cheapest channel there is, and the most forgotten. At the end of the job, ask if they know someone who needs the same service. Ask directly, once, with no discount attached.

What Google Maps shows about who ranks first

The businesses that show up first almost always have a lot of reviews for their own niche’s standard. The number varies widely from one industry to another.

NicheProfiles surveyedMedian reviewsNo website
Medical clinic605168%
Dental clinic604247%
Real estate agency60374,50%
Law firm60214,58%
Freight carrier6096,517%
Custom furniture608927%
Accounting firm6064,55%
Cleaning company45544%
Landscaping5836,514%
Metalworking industry53728%

Two takeaways come out of this table. The first is that you compete with the median of your niche, not with a generic target. A cleaning company with 60 reviews is already above the median of top profiles, while a clinic with 60 is far from it.

The second is that a website isn’t required to show up on the map. In custom furniture, 27% of top profiles have no website. But without a website you can’t measure anything, and that matters when it’s time to pay for ads. The cleaning case, with the other numbers for that niche, is in marketing for cleaning companies.

How to promote my business online with a website that measures

The website doesn’t need to be big. It needs to load fast on mobile, explain the service with the city name, and have a WhatsApp button that works.

The most common problem we found isn’t a missing website, it’s a blind website. Among the websites of top profiles, the share without Tag Manager and without GA4 was 64% in landscaping, 43% in accounting, and 42% in cleaning. These sites get visits without knowing where they came from or how many turned into contacts.

Speed matters too. On the 8 cleaning company websites we measured, the median time for the largest element on the mobile screen to appear was 9.25 seconds. Google’s benchmark for a good page is 2.5 seconds.

Instagram and social media

Instagram works as a storefront for people who have already heard of you, more than as a place where a stranger finds your business. They see your ad or your Google listing and head to Instagram to check that the business exists and the work is good.

So what matters is a profile that passes that check. Photos of real work, before and after when it makes sense, a price or price range when your industry allows it, and the WhatsApp link in your bio. The guide to Instagram content for businesses shows what to post without becoming a slave to the algorithm.

Facebook is still useful in two cases. Neighborhood groups, for local services, and Meta ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram at the same time.

When to pay to promote

Paid ads speed up what already works. If your profile doesn’t convert for free, an ad just lets you pay to find that out faster.

The price of a Google click varies by industry. In our CPC survey by industry, the median across 103 industries was R$4.96. That is the bid Google estimates for the top of the page in October 2026, not what each business pays. In cleaning, the top-of-page bid was R$6.46. In gardening and landscaping, R$3.72.

The topic of this article itself shows how competitive search is. In Keyword Planner, in October 2026, the search that gives this article its name had 170 searches per month, the version with “for free” had 40 more, and the version with “on the internet” had 20 more, with a top-of-page bid of up to R$36. The bid shows that advertisers are competing for people who ask this question.

If you provide services, the order changes a bit

A service business sells trust before it sells price. The customer is going to let someone into their home or handle a serious problem, so reviews and fast replies matter more than a pretty post.

For this kind of business, the Google Business Profile, reviews and WhatsApp answering within minutes do almost all the work. Instagram comes in as proof of the work done. When the goal is specifically to show up in search and on the map, the detailed path is in how to make my business show up on Google.
