AI Max for Google Ads is an automation layer you turn on in a Search campaign. It does three things: it finds search terms beyond your keywords, rewrites headlines and descriptions based on your page, and sends the click to the URL on your site that Google considers most relevant. It’s worth turning on when the campaign uses conversion-based bidding, has room in the budget, and has well-measured conversions. With manual CPC, a limited budget, or a site with pages that shouldn’t get ads, it’s better to wait.
People searching for this topic have usually already seen the recommendation inside their account. In Keyword Planner, in October 2026, in Brazil, “ai max google ads” had 140 searches per month, with a top-of-page bid of up to R$51.41. This guide explains what really changes and how to decide.
What is AI Max for Search campaigns
The official page is About AI Max for Search campaigns. Google describes AI Max as a set of targeting and creative improvements for Search. The developer documentation, in Get started with AI Max, makes one point clear that confuses a lot of people. It is not a new campaign type. It is a layer you turn on in a Search campaign that already exists.
In its FAQ, Google presents it as an evolution of dynamic search ads and of Performance Max URL expansion. If you’ve used DSA, you’ll recognize the logic.
The three features AI Max turns on
The page How AI Max works details each one.
| Feature | What they do | Where to turn it off |
|---|---|---|
| Search term matching | Uses broad match and keywordless technology to find new searches based on your keywords, ads, and URLs | In the ad group settings |
| Text customization | Generates headlines and descriptions based on the landing page and the search | In the campaign settings |
| Final URL expansion | Sends the user to the page on your site that the system considers most relevant | In the campaign settings, and it only works with text customization turned on |
One detail on the same page deserves attention if you pin headlines. With final URL expansion on, pinned assets are not respected. If your account relies on a pinned headline for legal or brand reasons, this changes the setup.
What changes for your keywords
This is the effect that shows up least in the recommendation and affects results the most.
Today, in a campaign with broad match, a broad keyword identical to the search gets priority as if it were exact. Google states that this priority no longer exists when you migrate to AI Max. To keep it, the guidance is to add exact copies of those keywords. Before turning it on, separate the keywords that convert most and check whether they have an exact match version.
Negative keywords still apply. The AI Max FAQ says in so many words that negatives are respected even with it on. This makes your negative list even more important, because the volume of new terms goes up.
When a search can trigger more than one ad in the account, the one with the higher Ad Rank wins, just like what already happens between broad match and Performance Max.
The controls that keep AI Max in check
The automation comes with brakes. Using all of them is what separates a controlled test from an account that starts showing up for the wrong searches.
- Location of interest, set per ad group.
- Brand inclusions, per campaign or per ad group, to restrict the ad to searches with certain brands.
- Brand exclusions, per campaign, so you don’t show up for competitor brand searches or your own, if it has a separate campaign.
- URL inclusions, per ad group.
- URL exclusions, per campaign, to remove pages from expansion such as the blog, careers, privacy policy, and client area.
The developer documentation also mentions text guidelines, with term exclusions and message restrictions for what the system writes. If your industry has forbidden words or promises that can’t be made, set this up before turning on text customization.
When to turn on AI Max for Google Ads
Google states that advertisers who turn on AI Max typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. The page itself says the number comes from Google internal data from 2025, for non-retail advertisers. It’s an average of those who turned it on, not a promise for your account.
From our experience with Search accounts, the scenario where testing is worthwhile has these conditions.
- Conversion-based bidding. The FAQ says AI Max search term matching doesn’t work with manual CPC and recommends Maximize conversions or Maximize conversion value.
- Budget without limits. Google says AI Max won’t be effective if the campaign is limited by budget, and the account shows an alert when that happens.
- Measured, reliable conversions. If the system optimizes for the wrong conversion, it finds more searches that generate the wrong conversion.
- An organized site, with a clear page per service or product, so URL expansion has good options.
- Exhausted search volume on current keywords, meaning the campaign already covers what it could with hand-picked keywords.
The guide to smart bidding in Google Ads shows how many conversions each strategy needs, and helps you tell whether your account is at that point.
When not to turn on AI Max
There are cases where turning on AI Max adds risk without a clear gain.
- A campaign on manual CPC, which is the case for many small accounts. Search term matching simply doesn’t work.
- A budget that runs out before the end of the day. First fix the budget or cut keywords that spend without converting.
- An account where the main conversion is a click on a WhatsApp button or a page visit, with no quality filter.
- Regulated industries, such as healthcare and law, where a generated headline might promise what it can’t. If you turn it on, use the text guidelines and review the generated ads every week.
- A site with many pages outside the commercial focus, such as a large blog and institutional pages, without URL exclusions set up.
In these scenarios, a well-built hand-managed campaign performs better. The article on Google Ads Expert Mode shows how to keep that control from the moment you create the account.
How to test AI Max without losing control of the account
The safest way is to turn it on in one campaign at a time and monitor it closely.
- Choose the campaign with the most conversions and conversion-based bidding.
- Add the keywords that convert most as exact match, so you don’t lose the priority.
- Review your negatives and your brand and URL exclusions.
- Turn on AI Max and note the date.
- In the first week, open the search terms report every day. It shows AI Max as a match type and a column for the term’s source.
- In the landing pages report, the Selected by column shows which URLs were chosen by expansion.
- After two to four weeks, compare cost per conversion and lead quality in your CRM with the previous period.
Here at Ciclicko we always check contact quality, not just the number of conversions. Search expansion usually brings more volume, and part of it may be people who don’t buy.
If you don’t like the test results, turning it off is simple. The FAQ notes that when you turn it off, all AI Max features go off together, including the brand exclusions it set up. When you turn it back on, the settings return as they were.
