SEO for doctors is the work of making a practice or clinic website show up on Google for people searching a specialty, symptom or procedure, without paying per click. In healthcare it matters more than in other sectors for two reasons. Google demands more trust from pages that can affect people’s health, and Google itself hid in Keyword Planner the volume of almost half of the health searches we measured. All of this under CFM Resolution 2.336/2023 (from Brazil’s Federal Council of Medicine), which requires name, CRM and RQE on every page.

This text covers the website and organic search. Paid ads are in the guide to clinic ads on Google, and the general advertising rules, Instagram included, in the guide on what the CFM allows.

Why SEO for doctors is different

Health is the kind of topic where Google demands the most proof that a page is trustworthy. It is also the topic where Google shows the least about what people search for.

Google treats health as a high-risk topic

Google’s documentation on helpful, reliable content says its systems give “even more weight” to content with strong signals of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) on topics that can affect health. Google calls these topics “Your Money or Your Life,” or YMYL.

In practice, sign every text. A page about migraines with the neurologist’s name, CRM and RQE shows the reader, and Google, who is behind the information.

Keyword Planner hides half of health searches

In our CPC survey by sector, Google returned no volume or bid for 27 of 56 health searches, or 48%. In other sectors, that happened with 5 of 376 searches, or 1%.

For SEO, this changes keyword research. If you build a content plan only with Keyword Planner, you are blind to half of what patients search for. The way out is to work with the real questions that reach the practice, with the suggestions in Google’s search box and with the site’s own Search Console, which shows the searches that already bring visits.

Even searches for this service are small. “seo para médicos” and its variations have about 140 searches a month, with a bid of up to R$16 in Keyword Planner, in October 2026.

What it is worth to show up for free

Showing up in organic results avoids paying for the clicks other clinics pay for. The numbers below are for health searches that Google still shows. They are Google’s estimated top-of-page bid in October 2026, not what each company pays.

SearchSearches per monthTop-of-page bid
ophthalmologist201.000R$1.84 to R$6.39
eye exam27.100R$1.61 to R$6.14
online therapy22.200R$3.91 to R$10.76
psychologist appointment1.600R$2.42 to R$7.54
medical testing lab5.400R$0.84 to R$3.55

The clinic that shows up organically for “ophthalmologist” in your city does not pay for those clicks. In ophthalmology, the sector’s bid midpoint was R$4.09. In psychology, R$7.18.

What the top Google Maps clinics have on their sites

In October 2026 we surveyed the 60 profiles that Google Maps shows first in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte for “medical clinic”. We read the site of 53 of them and measured mobile speed on a sample of 8.

What we measuredResult
Average Google rating4,11
Median reviews516
Profiles with 100 reviews or more82%
Profiles without opening hours7%
Sites with structured data (schema)62%
Sites with no Tag Manager and no GA440%
Sites with WhatsApp link75%
Largest element load time on mobile (median of the 8 sites)9.65 s
Sample sites above 2.5 s88%
Median PageSpeed score (mobile)52,5

Three takeaways for whoever looks after the site.

Speed is the weakest point. On the 8 sites we measured, the median was 9.65 seconds for the largest element to appear on mobile, almost four times the 2.5 seconds Google considers good. This is a technical SEO item the doctor rarely sees and the patient feels immediately.

Tracking is missing on 40% of sites, which had neither Google Tag Manager nor GA4. Without tracking, the clinic does not know which page brings the patient who books an appointment, and SEO becomes a gamble.

The average rating was 4.11, with a median of 516 reviews per profile. Replying to each review soberly, without exposing the patient’s case, is part of the work on Maps.

What the CFM requires on every page of the site

CFM Resolution 2.336/2023, published on September 13, 2023, treats the website as the doctor’s own channel (article 8, paragraph 1). Under it, advertising can aim to build, keep or grow the patient base. The full text is on the CFM website.

These are the points that affect the site.

  • Every piece carries the name, CRM number and the word MÉDICO (physician), plus specialty and RQE when applicable (article 4). On a website, this information goes on the main page (article 6).
  • The clinic’s site shows the establishment’s name with its CRM registration, and the name of the medical technical director with their CRM (article 5).
  • A physician with a postgraduate degree but no RQE is listed as MÉDICO with a postgraduate degree in the field, followed by NÃO ESPECIALISTA (non-specialist) in capital letters (article 13).
  • The consultation fee may be stated, as may the payment method (article 9, item VI).
  • It is prohibited to guarantee, promise or imply good treatment results (article 11, item XII).
  • Before and after photos are only allowed for educational purposes, in a set of images showing satisfactory and unsatisfactory outcomes and complications (article 14).

And one writing caution. Article 11, item I, bars a doctor who is not a specialist from advertising that they treat specific organs or diseases. A “Thyroid treatment” page on a general practitioner’s site may run into that.

Check with your CRM’s Codame (medical advertising committee) before publishing a page that raises doubt.

SEO for medical clinics, step by step

SEO for a medical site follows the same order as any service site, with trust turned up. This is the sequence we use.

  1. Measure before changing anything. Search Console and GA4 installed, tracking WhatsApp and form conversions. Without that, you can’t tell what worked.
  2. Mobile speed. Compressed images, fewer plugins and caching. The technical SEO guide lists what to check.
  3. One page per specialty and per procedure. Each one written or reviewed by the doctor, with name, CRM (medical license number) and RQE (specialist registration) visible, plus a review date.
  4. Content built from the questions asked in the office. Keyword Planner hides half of health searches, so the question a patient asks during an appointment is worth more than the tool.
  5. Structured data. Clinic and physician markup, with the address, hours and phone number matching your Google Maps profile. The step-by-step is in structured data.
  6. Local SEO. A complete Google Business Profile, the right categories, real photos and replies to reviews. The article on Google Business Profile for clinics and medical offices covers the rules for healthcare.

How to get a doctor’s website on Google

If the site is new, Google may not have found its pages yet. Add your domain to Search Console, submit the sitemap and request indexing for the main pages. After that, your ranking comes from content, speed and trust signals, which take months, not days.

What usually goes wrong on medical websites

  • Specialty text copied from another site or written without the doctor’s review, with no name or CRM.
  • A single page with all the specialties, instead of one page for each.
  • A heavy hero banner that holds up loading on mobile for several seconds.
  • A patient testimonial praising results, published as proof. Article 8, paragraph 3, says that whatever a doctor reposts becomes their own publication.
  • Address and phone number that differ between the site and the Google Maps profile.

Frequently asked questions

What is SEO for doctors? It’s the set of adjustments to the site and its content that makes a practice show up on Google for people searching for a specialty or a health problem, without paying per click and within the rules of Brazil’s Federal Council of Medicine (CFM).

Does SEO for medical clinics work? It works when the clinic has one page per specialty, a site that’s fast on mobile, the full identification required by the CFM and a well-kept Google Maps profile. Results take months and depend on the competition in your city.

How do you get a doctor’s website on Google? Add your domain to Search Console, submit the sitemap and request indexing. To rank well, the site needs content signed by the doctor and good mobile speed.
