With reels editing for businesses, the split is simple. You record the raw footage (you talking, the product, the service being performed) and the editor returns the vertical video ready to post, with cuts, on-screen captions, pacing, music, a cover and the file in a format Instagram accepts. What weighs most on the quote is the amount of raw footage, the length of the reel, who writes the script and how much animation is involved. If you record well, you pay less for editing.

This guide is for people who have already decided they need video and now want to hire an editor. If you’re still unsure which format to use, start with carousel or reels. If you’re looking for someone to do everything, from topic planning to design, the post on content production agencies compares the vendor models.

What reels editing is and who handles what

Reels editing means turning loose recordings into a short video that keeps people watching to the end. The editor can’t create a scene you didn’t record. They pick the best clip, cut the silence, arrange the order so it makes sense and put text on screen for people watching without sound.

The most common mix-up when hiring is assuming the reels editor will also film, write the script and publish. Sometimes they will, but then the service has a different name and a different size. Before asking for a quote, write down what stays with you.

When the topic plan and script also come from the vendor, the service is called social media video production. It’s a different quote because it’s a different job.

The format the editor needs to follow

There’s a technical side, and it isn’t a matter of taste. The Instagram Help Center page on reel size says a reel can have an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16, with a minimum of 30 frames per second and a minimum resolution of 720 pixels. It also recommends a cover of 420 by 654 pixels, a 1:1.55 ratio. Heads up, you can’t change the cover after upload.

In practice, a business reel comes out at 9:16, which fills the whole phone screen. Ask the editor for three things the spec sheet doesn’t cover:

  • important text kept away from the top and bottom edges, where the account name, caption and buttons sit;
  • on-screen captions big enough to read on a phone without zooming;
  • a cover with the topic written on it, because that’s what shows in the profile grid.

How to record so you pay less for editing

The editor works with what they receive. Bad footage turns into editing hours, and editing hours turn into price. These steps cut a good share of the rework.

  1. Record vertically. Horizontal video cropped to 9:16 loses half the image and almost always cuts someone off.
  2. Take care of the sound before the picture. A cheap lavalier mic does more than a better camera. Muffled speech can’t be fixed well in editing.
  3. Leave two seconds of buffer before you start talking and after you finish. The cut comes out clean.
  4. Record the same line two or three times. The editor picks the best one, and you don’t have to nail it on the first take.
  5. Shoot supporting scenes. Hands at work, the product on the counter, the storefront, a customer being served (with permission). They cover the cuts in the spoken parts.
  6. Send the original file. Video sent over WhatsApp loses quality to compression. Use a cloud folder link.
  7. Send one line of context per video. What it’s about, which phrase can’t be cut, and whether there’s a promotion with an end date.

This recording script is worth its weight in gold when the reels video editor is outside your company. They weren’t there when you shot it.

What changes the price of reel editing

There is no list price for reel editing that fits everyone, and be wary of anyone who quotes without seeing the footage. The factors below move the budget the most, with any provider.

FactorWhy it matters
Amount of raw footageAn hour of recording for a 40-second reel means a lot of digging
Final lengthA longer reel has more cuts, more captions and more music to fit
Script included or notWriting what will be said is a different job, done by a different person
Animated captionsWord-by-word text takes longer than static captions
Animation and graphicsMotion with logo, numbers and icons is the most expensive part of editing
Number of versionsA 15-second version and a 45-second one double the work
Revision roundsUnlimited revisions usually come with a tightly limited scope
TimelineSame-day delivery pushes the rest of the queue back

A good sign is when the provider asks about these points before sending a price. A bad sign is a package that talks only about the number of videos, with no length or revisions.

Freelance reels editor, app or agency

There are three common paths, and each makes sense at a different stage.

PathWhen it worksWhere it usually fails
You edit in an appGetting started, low volume, simple topicOwner’s time and visual consistency
Freelance reels editorYou already record well and only want the editingTurnaround when they take on many clients, and replacement if they leave
Agency or content teamReels are part of a calendar with posts and carouselsA fixed package that doesn’t fit your volume

An editing app solves the first month. The problem shows up in the third, when the owner stops recording because they also have to edit. A freelancer is great when the relationship is stable. A content team makes sense when the reel needs to work with the rest of the feed, with the same identity and the same calendar. If you’re facing this bigger decision, read what comes in a social media package before comparing proposals.

How to tell if the editing is working

Good editing is measured on the published reel, not on the taste of whoever approved it. Instagram Insights shows, for each reel, views, viewers and interactions, over periods of up to 90 days. Compare similar reels, on the same type of topic, before and after changing editors.

Another useful tool is the trial reel. The help page on trial reels explains that, with a professional account, you can show the reel first to people who don’t follow your profile, see the insights within 24 hours and only then share it with everyone. You can test two openings of the same video without filling the feed with versions.

Three questions to ask when you look at the numbers:

  • Does the reel lose people right at the start? The opening may be slow, or the first sentence doesn’t say what it’s about.
  • Do people who watch to the end do anything? If they don’t save, share or message you, the ending is missing a clear call to action.
  • Do reels with on-screen captions do better than those without? On most business profiles, people watch without sound.

And keep the rule that applies to any format. Steady volume matters more than one perfect video a month. For posting rhythm, see how many times to post on Instagram per week.

How we do reel editing at Ciclicko

In Ciclicko’s content creation, the reel counts toward the same monthly total as the other designs, on plans that include video, up to 60 seconds. You do the recording. You send the raw footage and one line of context, and the team returns the edited reel in your brand identity, with on-screen captions and a cover, ready to post. All through chat, with revisions.

When the client doesn’t know what to record, we suggest the topic and the shot list along with the month’s calendar. That removes the biggest bottleneck, which is almost never the editing. It’s the camera sitting idle because nobody knows what to film.

Frequently asked questions

How long does reel editing take? It depends on the footage and the scope. A simple reel with well-recorded footage is ready in a few days, but animation, several versions and a lot of raw footage all stretch the timeline. Agree on the deadline in writing before you start.

Do I need a professional camera to record company reels? No. A recent phone recording vertically, with good light and a lavalier mic, handles most company reels. Sound is what sinks amateur video the most.

What’s the difference between a reels editor and a social media manager? The editor turns the recording into a finished video. The social media manager handles the content plan, captions, publishing and sometimes the designs, which makes the routine much broader than editing alone. Some professionals do both, but they are different jobs. The post what a social media manager does details the routine.

Does the same reel work for TikTok and YouTube Shorts? The vertical format works, but remove one app’s watermark before posting on the other and adjust the caption to each network’s audience. On TikTok, we have a guide to TikTok for business.

Can I use any song in the company’s reel? Don’t count on it. Use the songs Instagram makes available for your account at the time of posting, or tracks with a commercial license. A famous song added during editing can be muted or blocked.
