Google Business Profile works like a public listing that Google cross-references with the rest of the internet to decide who to show when someone searches for a service nearby. It ranks results by relevance, distance, and prominence, and only the first two depend on what you write.
Your profile is only half the story
Almost every article about Google Business Profile stops at the profile itself, as if it were a standalone listing. It isn’t. The profile is one side of a check that Google runs constantly between what you claim and what the rest of the internet confirms.
You state that your name is Ciclicko Digital, that you’re on a certain street, and that your phone number is a certain one. Google looks for that same name, that same address, and that same phone number on your website, in directories, on social media, and anywhere else the business is mentioned. When it matches, trust goes up. When it doesn’t, Google marks you down.
That’s why changing the phone number only on the profile and forgetting the footer of your site weakens both.
The three ranking signals, no sugarcoating
Google publishes the criteria for local results in its own documentation, and the names haven’t changed since 2019.
- Relevance. How well the profile matches what the person typed. Driven by the primary category, secondary categories, services, and description.
- Distance. Between the searcher and you. Changes with every search, and there’s no way to change it.
- Prominence. How well known the business is. Driven by reviews, mentions of your name on other sites, and your own site’s authority on the organic side.
What Google reads in your profile
Not every field in the profile becomes a search signal. Some are indexed text, others are just for display.
- Becomes a signal: primary category, secondary categories, service names, service descriptions, products, reviews, and the text of your replies to reviews
- Becomes display only: photos, logo, cover image, action button, hours
- Becomes a filter: attributes like parking, accessibility, and payment methods, which Maps uses to filter results
- Becomes trust: consistency of name, address, and phone number here and across the rest of the internet
The role of reviews, bigger than it looks
A review isn’t just a star rating. The text of the review is indexed, which is why ten customers writing “fast service for AC repair” teach Google what you do better than any field you fill in.
Three things carry weight, and none of them is the rating alone. Volume relative to the competitors showing up in the same search. Pace, because fifty reviews in one week followed by none looks like a purchased pattern. And replies, because a profile that responds looks alive.
A 5.0 rating with 12 reviews loses to a 4.6 with 180 in most competitive searches. We wrote up the method for asking without buying reviews in how to get Google reviews.
What changed with AI in 2026
Local search stopped being just a list. A growing share of queries now return a written answer that cites two or three businesses and resolves the question without the person opening anything.
That changes where your text goes. Filling out the profile used to be for the ranking algorithm. Now the text in your services, your description, and your reviews is raw material for a generated answer. An empty field isn’t just an empty field: it’s absence from the conversation.
Whoever describes each service in a full sentence shows up in that answer. Whoever left the field blank doesn’t show up, even with more reviews. The full topic is covered in Google Ask Maps and the new local search.
How long it takes to work
Changes to category and services usually show results in 3 to 7 days, since it’s just text reindexing. Gains from reviews and activity build up over time, and are measured in months.
The common mistake is changing everything in the same week and not knowing what worked. Change the category, wait seven days, check the Performance panel. Then update your services. It’s slower to do and much faster to learn from.

Frequently asked questions
Does Google My Business still exist? It does, now called Google Business Profile. The standalone app was retired, and management moved into Google Search itself.
Does it help my website rank? Indirectly. The profile and the website are two separate systems, but your site’s authority is one of the prominence signals for the profile.
Do I need to post every week? Update posts expire after 7 days. Keeping a steady pace makes your profile look active, which helps more with clicks than with ranking position.
Can I have a profile in more than one city? Only with a real address and real service in each one. A fake profile in a neighboring city gets removed after being reported.
Is it worth hiring someone? The step by step is laid out in our optimization guide. If you’d rather hand it off, Ciclicko’s optimization service pricing depends on scope and is sent on request.
